Women’s Annex Foundation To Raise Pilot Funds on Giving Tuesday for The Superhero Factory Project
New York, NY (PRWEB) December 02, 2014 -- A new initiative launching today by Women’s Annex Foundation is giving a young generation of girls in Afghanistan their own Superheroes to be inspired by. As part of Giving Tuesday, the Women’s Annex Foundation, is raising pilot funds for a very special project, The Superhero Factory, which enables female students in the Foundation’s IT Centers to learn graphic design and create their own Superheroes, as well explore online lessons in business and marketing. To date, the Foundation continues the initiative of training more than 6,200 female students and connecting 55,000 to the internet, and main donors include Sheryl Sandberg, Biz Stone, Craig Newmark, and Francesco Rulli.
As this weekend’s suicide attacks in Kabul illustrated, the Taliban is on the offensive in anticipation of U.S. withdrawal. In a country where women are not free to voice their opinions or discuss their ambitions, it is imperative for the future of Afghanistan that the development of education and civil society started during Western occupation be continued into the future.
As more than thirteen years of war draws to a close in Afghanistan, Roya Mahboob, a 27 year-old technology entrepreneur from Afghanistan and founder of the Women’s Annex Foundation is narrowing the gender gap and finding her own resolution to inspire young Afghan females. Superheroes do not exist in Afghan culture, and yet have the possibility to enrich the dreams of children and the ambitions of young women, especially in developing, war-torn areas where hope for good is what a child dreams of. It is Roya’s passion to inspire children through Women’s Annex Foundation, and to provide them with knowledge for their future and a digital voice to express themselves online.
Roya, a member of “2013 Time 100s Most Influential People in the World” is three things that are uncommon to today’s Afghanistan: young, female, and an entrepreneur. Through Women’s Annex Foundation, Roya seeks to empower female students through Digital Literacy—literally teaching them the skills to sustain and empower themselves in the digital world we live in.
