“Human Swarms” Unleash the Collective Intelligence of Online Groups
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 02, 2015 -- A new study reveals the power of “human swarms” to harness the intelligence of online groups. As will be presented this week the Collective Intelligence 2015 conference in Santa Clara CA (June 1 – 2), researchers at Unanimous A.I. have found that by organizing online users into real-time swarms, the speed and accuracy of group predictions was significantly increased.
It all goes back to the birds and bees – across nature, countless species have evolved methods of boosting group intelligence by coming together in flocks, shoals, schools, and swarms. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, researchers at Unanimous A.I. have been exploring a fundamental question: Can humans swarm, and if so, can swarming boost the intelligence of online groups?
To test the power of swarms, groups of networked users were asked to make predictions on a timely and verifiable event: the 2015 Academy Awards. These predictions were made two ways – first with users working as individuals and second by working together as a unified collective intelligence. To enable the collective intelligence, a new online platform was developed called UNUM that allows groups of networked users to work together in real-time swarms to answer questions and make predictions.
As a baseline, 48 individuals were given a survey about the Oscars, asking them to predict the top 15 award categories. On average, individuals achieved 6 correct predictions (40% success). The same questions were posed to a swarm of users fielded from the same pool. When answering as a unified collective intelligence, the swarm achieved 11 correct predictions (73% success). These preliminary results suggest that human swarming is a promising method of harnessing group intelligence.
